Accounting for Non-accountants


General objectives:

• Introduce the participants to the basic accounting principles
• Introduce the participants to the accounting cycle, recording and posting accounting entries and inventory reconciliations
• Introduce the participants to the basic financial statements, their  importance and the advantages of each financial statement
• How to analyse and explain financial statements for the purpose of making management decisions

Targeted group:

• Non-financial managers and section heads who want to enhance their understanding of the accounting concepts and methods
• Non-financial managers, section heads and others who use financial information in making decisions or who submit reports on their performance to their senior management
• Novice accountants and financial analysts

Contents:

• Introduction to accounting, financial reports and their significance to users of financial statements

• Review of the dual entry system and the accounting cycle through inventory reconciliations and trail balance

• Profit and loss statement, its components and significance

• Balance sheet, its components and significance

• Cash flows, their analysis and cash significance

• Financing resources and working capital

• Calculating and explaining financial ratios

• Financial analysis for management purposes
